Sh74 billion subsidy for poor homes electricity connections

Kenya’s ambitious project to subsidise electricity connection charges by more than half as an incentive to trigger increased connections among poor homes has returned a Sh74 billion bill since introduction in 2015.

President Uhuru Kenyatta launched the last mile project in 2015 but it took effect a year later. It involves home connections at a subsidised fee of Sh15,000 payable over a staggered period, a 57 per cent cut from the previous Sh35,000 upfront payout.
