Electricity bills hit an all-time high despite tariff cuts

Power bills for homes that consume 200 kilowatt hours (kWh) per month, mostly middle class, rose from Sh4,485 in January to a high of Sh4,561 last month – the highest cost point since the government started making public the data.

The bills upsurge comes despite tariff cuts by the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) last November for homes that consume less than 100 units of electricity monthly following President Uhuru Kenyatta’s directive. The cuts covered 5.7 million homes (consuming less than 100 kWh a month), representing 84 per cent of the 6.8 million customers connected to the national power grid.
