Off-grid energy firm BBOXX has launched a pilot to provide internet access for communities in Rwanda, creating internet connections via Wi-Fi hotspots in a joint venture with Axiom Networks. So far, ten fixed hotspots powered by BBOXX solar systems have been installed. They provide service at 10-20 Mbps even in remote areas.
Data bundles and smartphone financing aim to make access affordable to end-customers. Local entrepreneurs manage the hotspots and teach customers how to make the most of the internet.
