A Mara lodge has gone off-grid

Emboo camp sits next to the seasonal Talek River. Its tented rooms and shared spaces overlook the river channel, giving campers delightful views.

The luxury lodge fully runs on off-grid solar power. Its solar plant does it all from lighting the spacious tented rooms, heating water, charging the electric safari Land Cruisers to pumping borehole water.

On the Emboo camp website, the commitment to ecological behaviour is deeply rooted: “Emboo River is the first eco lodge of its kind in the Maasai Mara, in Kenya and in the region. We are rethinking the entire safari experience, to make sure that our guests have a stay in the Maasai Mara which is magical, memorable as well as eco-friendly.

Through innovation and technology we increase our positive impact on nature and our community. Our push for sustainability is especially important in the Maasai Mara, an impressive eco system in Kenya which hosts a variety of animals, plants and trees and is the home to the Maasai community. Water and other resources in the Maasai Mara are precious, and we are doing our utmost to have a positive impact.”
